01Overview

Hyperion Percussion: Marimba is the first instrument in Soundiron's Hyperion Percussion series. It is built from samples of a full-scale five-octave rosewood marimba and runs in Native Instruments Kontakt on Windows and macOS. The library covers 61 notes, and each note is sampled with several mallet types, round-robin variations and velocity layers. Its interface includes an LFO, filters, glide, an arpeggiator, key and scale locking, and a modular FX rack with convolution reverb.

Mallet Choices and Sound Character

The library is sampled with four mallet types. Innovative Percussion PC3 medium soft yarn mallets give a warm, heavy, softly rounded tone. Promark SPYR SM3 medium yarn mallets provide a balanced, classic response. Vic Firth M293 hard yarn mallets give a crisp, sharp, precise attack. Extra-large soft rubber mallets produce a springy bounce, a smooth attack and a pronounced, blooming sustain.

Soundiron places each bar's microphone position close and wide in the stereo field. You can reposition the instrument across the key range and choose a room, hall, algorithmic reverb or impulse response from the Space tab.

Controls and Workflow

The Kontakt interface exposes swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. An LFO offers selectable shapes, modulation targets, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time.

The arpeggiator includes a velocity table and controls for direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration. A key and scale lock constrains notes to common scales for melodic writing and live play. The FX rack holds up to eight modules from a list of 27 effects, which you can order as you like.
