01Overview

Groove Agent 6 is built for drum programming and groove creation. It includes five acoustic kits played by session drummers, a pattern editor with a dedicated lane for each pad, and more than 1,000 MIDI grooves and patterns you can drag into a project. Its layering and replacement feature lets you add a second kick, snare or tom layer to shape the sound of a kit. Steinberg also reports new effects, a redesigned interface and hardware mapping for e-drum sets.

Acoustic kits and sound shaping

Groove Agent 6 includes five mix-ready acoustic drum kits. The Punch Kit is based on a deeply sampled Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit with natural room ambience and comes with 25 presets that include intros, outros and multiple groove variations.

For custom sounds, the layering and replacement feature covers kicks, snares and toms. Steinberg sampled 47 new acoustic kit pieces for this feature: 15 kicks, eight toms and 24 snares. Five new effects are included: Auto Gain Compressor, Fuzz Distortion, Clipper, Studio EQ 24 and one more in the effects set.

Pattern editing and workflow

The pattern editor assigns each pad its own lane, and includes random and Euclidean step generators for building rhythms. The mixer can be docked at the bottom of the interface or opened in its own window, so kit and mixer settings can be edited side by side.

The MediaBay is context-sensitive. When you layer kicks, it shows only kick samples. You can also filter by Agent type or browse Steinberg sample packs in the Sample tab. The pitch analysis tool detects the pitch of drum samples so they can be tuned to the key of a song.
