01Overview

Backbone is built around drum re-synthesis. Producers can layer up to eight samples, shape them with classic subtractive synthesis, and split each sound into tonal and noise elements to edit them separately. Version 1.5 adds DrumGAN, an AI generator developed with Sony Computer Science Laboratories, which creates new kick, snare and cymbal samples that can then be reworked inside Backbone. The plugin is aimed at producers who want to build their own drum sounds rather than rely only on sample libraries.

Best for

  • Drum sound design
  • Custom kick and snare creation
  • Cinematic hits and risers
  • Powerful 808 sounds

Drum Re-Synthesis and Sound Manipulation

Backbone lets you layer up to eight samples and decompose them into tonal and noise components. Each part can be modified on its own, which makes it possible to change the body of a kick without affecting its transient, or to reshape a snare's noise layer independently of its tone.

The plugin also includes up to eight effects across two fully routable buses. Steinberg highlights re-synthesis as the core feature, with the aim of manipulating samples in ways that go beyond standard sample playback.

For sound design, the developer lists cinematic hits, rises, swooshes and powerful 808s among the target uses.

DrumGAN and AI-Generated Drum Samples

DrumGAN generates kick, snare and cymbal samples from scratch, and it can also analyze existing samples, replicate them and produce variations. If a generated sound is close to what you want but not quite right, DrumGAN can create more variations in the same style.

The generated samples are not final sounds. You can layer them, decompose them or re-synthesize them in Backbone, so the AI output becomes a starting point for your own design.

Sony CSL's research team, Javier Nistal and Stefan Lattner, developed the generation system using Generative Adversarial Networks trained on a large collection of drum sounds.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Backbone support?

Backbone is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS, and is 64-bit.

What is DrumGAN in Backbone?

DrumGAN is an AI drum generator developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories. It creates new kick, snare and cymbal samples, analyzes existing samples and generates variations of a sound you like. It was added in Backbone 1.5.

What are the system requirements for Backbone?

On Windows, Backbone requires Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a minimum display resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 100% UI scaling. On macOS, it supports macOS Big Sur through Sequoia, including Apple Silicon through Rosetta 2 or native. Both platforms need 2 GB of free storage and an internet connection for license activation, installer download and account registration.
