01Overview

Boom started life as one of the instrument plugins in Avid Pro Tools and was later released on its own. Its interface takes cues from popular vintage drum machines, and the developer says it has been used on hit albums, feature films and radio projects. The plugin gives producers electronic drum sounds that they can shape, sequence and save as presets within their own DAW session, with formats covering VST3, VST2 and AU.

Drum Kits and Sound Shaping

Boom includes 10 electronic drum kits. They include variations on the classic 808 and 909 kits, more aggressive Dance and Urban-style kits, and a retro-style kit modeled on the concept of a CR78 merged with a 606.

Each kit contains 10 drums, and you can adjust the panning, volume, tuning and decay of every drum. Each drum channel also has a tuning screw for a sound-specific adjustment. You can mix drums from different kits to build a custom kit, and each drum can be triggered individually through standard MIDI pitch mappings.

Onboard Sequencer and Pattern Workflow

The onboard sequencer lets you create, trigger and save your own patterns as presets. Pattern Select mode uses the keys along the bottom of the interface, colour coded to match a MIDI keyboard from middle C upward, for remote pattern selection.

In Pattern Edit mode you can program patterns on the Matrix display or with the bottom keys, and copy one pattern to another. Playback can be set to normal, double, half or triplet time within your host, and a swing control is included.
