01Overview

Greg Wells PianoCentric is built around a single main control that moves a piano or keyboard from dark and lo-fi to neutral to bright and punchy. Waves developed it with producer and mixer Greg Wells, who is also a professional pianist. The plugin is aimed at producers who struggle to place piano and keys in a dense arrangement, where the instrument needs either to sit back or to push forward.

Shaping Piano Tone With the Main Control

The main knob covers a continuum of sounds. Turning it clockwise brightens the signal and adds punch so the piano lifts in the mix. Turning it counter-clockwise darkens the sound and embeds the piano further into the arrangement.

Because the control is one knob, it is quick to dial in and easy to automate. Waves notes that automating the main control can change the color of the piano over the course of a mix.

Delay, Doubler and Acoustic Guitar Use

PianoCentric includes a tempo-synced Delay for adding animation and motion to keyboard parts. A Doubler adds a richer, more diffuse piano sound.

The developer also says the plugin can help when mixing full-bodied acoustic guitars, so it is not limited to keys.
