Fractured is a sound design and music production library built around acoustic guitar. Vir2 Instruments recorded the guitar in unusual ways, including mallet strikes, fingernail and metal scrapes, cardboard scrapes, and rice poured over the strings, and then processed the material into playable instruments. The library spans 2.3GB of compressed samples across five folders, and each instrument comes with its own set of controls, so the results range from rhythmic kits to long evolving pads that blur the line between acoustic and electronic sound.

Sound Character and Instrument Types

The patches cover a wide range of textures. Drum kits are assembled from the prepared guitar sounds, and the developer describes them as gritty electronic drums. Long pads are built from acoustic guitar samples and evolve over time. The library also includes playable rhythmic loops and patterns, multitimbral arpeggiated instruments, cinematic impacts, and melodic instruments with a gnarly or ethereal quality.

The instruments are sorted into five folders: Chromatic Kits, Drum Kits, Melodic, Pads & SFX, and Tempo Synced. This makes it easier to browse by role when you are building a track around a specific sound type.

Controls and Workflow in the Kontakt Interface

Each of the 104 instruments has a custom set of controls, and the knobs shown change depending on the patch loaded. Common controls include quantization, attack and release envelopes, stereo spread, lowpass and highpass filters, and layer blend.

Effect controls are also built in for many patches, including reverb, delay, drive, flanger, vibrato, rotator, and wobble. Autopan and a repeater are available on suitable instruments, giving you rhythmic movement without needing a separate effect chain.
