01Overview

Density is an audio effect plugin from Sound Particles that generates several layers of sound from one track. It uses granular processing to thicken a source, so a solo voice can become a choir-style ensemble and a single violin can become a string section. The developer says it works in stereo and in immersive formats, which makes it relevant for music production as well as sound design. Density is available as VST3, AU and AAX for macOS and Windows.

Three Modes for Building Layered Ensembles

Density offers three modes. Basic Mode is designed for quick use, with a small set of controls that can create small or large ensembles from a single sound. Detune Mode is aimed at building the feel of layered voices and adds more advanced controls for grain generation and voice movement. Pitch Mode creates multiple groups of voices, each with its own pitch, voice count and gain, which allows choir-style harmonization.

An XY pad lets you control two parameters at the same time with the mouse, and a Top View shows the layers as a circular representation in 3D space. Randomization and presets give you a fast way to explore different results.

Immersive Output and Spatial Movement

Density supports stereo, 5.1, 7.1, Ambisonics, binaural and Dolby Atmos output. The developer presents this as a way to place generated voices in a spatial field, which suits producers working on immersive mixes or film and game sound design.

Movement settings let grains travel through the field using selectable movement patterns. Separate control of the input signal and the generated voices lets you automate the gain of the generated layers over the course of a track.
