01Overview

Monster Low Winds is a sample library for Kontakt that focuses on the lowest woodwinds of the orchestra. The ensemble was recorded at the MGM Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios, with players seated in a semi-circle to create a wide, beefy stereo image. The instrument offers standard articulations along with True Legato patches that handle intervallic leaps in both directions, plus a set of effect articulations for rumbles, squeaks, clusters, swells and rips.

Sound, Microphones and Mix Options

The ensemble includes 2 bassoons, 3 contrabassoons, 2 contrabass clarinets and 3 bass clarinets. Cinesamples recorded it with the standard Decca Tree Wide Surround microphone arrays typical of feature film scoring, along with a few close microphone pairs.

The Mixer tab provides seven mix presets and an eighth slot for a user-programmable mix. Tim's Mix blends all microphone arrays, the CLOSE mix uses the close pairs for a more direct perspective, the ROOM mix is built from the Decca Tree Wide combination, and the SURROUND mix uses the surround pair. A basic EQ and reverb are included in the Mixer tab.

Legato Controls and Tape Saturation

True Legato patches analyze the intervals you play and trigger the matching recorded transition between notes. The Legato Speed knob sets the length of that transition: lower values suit faster passages, while higher values use more of the recorded transition for a longer, more connected line.

The Dynamic Range slider sets how much dynamic change the mod wheel controls. At the top of the range the mod wheel moves from nothing to fortè; at the bottom it changes timbre with little change in volume. The Tape Saturation control adds Kontakt's tape emulation to add color and glue the ensemble together, and higher settings can distort the signal as an effect.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Monster Low Winds?

Monster Low Winds requires Kontakt 5.6.8 or higher. It works with both the free Kontakt Player and the full version of Kontakt.

Which formats and operating systems does it support?

It is available in VST2, AU, AAX, Standalone and Kontakt formats, as 64-bit software. It runs on Windows 7, 8 or 10 and on Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, with Mac support limited to 64-bit. The Windows build is available in 32-bit and 64-bit.

How much disk space does it need?

The installation requires at least 6GB of free hard drive space, and the library is about 3GB after installation. The minimum recommended RAM is 8GB.

What is True Legato?

True Legato patches were sampled across the intervallic leaps throughout the ranges, both up and down. When you play, the patch analyzes the intervals and plays the matching transition between notes.
