CineBrass Descant Horn: Kontakt Horn Instrument by Cinesamples

01Overview

The CineBrass Descant Horn captures a horn with a shorter tube, roughly 6 feet instead of the 12 feet of a standard French horn, which places its harmonic series an octave higher. Cinesamples sampled a dual-bore instrument, so the switch between the Bb side and the high F side is meant to sound seamless. The instrument is aimed at composers who need delicacy and accuracy in the upper register, particularly for solos over strings and woodwinds.

Sound and character of the descant horn

Cinesamples describes the Descant Horn as having a sound that is more shallow and delicate than the low F of a French horn. Its upper register is lighter and easier than a standard horn's, which can sound more strident in the same range. The developer compares this to a piccolo trumpet versus a regular trumpet.

The instrument's sweet spot is its upper range rather than its lower register. Cinesamples notes that a dual-bore design gives a fuller sound from about middle C downward than a single-bore descant horn does.

Patches and articulations included

The instrument ships with six patches. The main Descant Articulations patch includes sustains with two round robins, legato from mp through f, and both short staccato and staccato with three round robins each. Separate patches cover Legato at full and mezzo-piano dynamics, a sustained-and-legato version at f, and standalone Staccato and Short Staccato instruments.

To load the main articulations patch with the full mix position, Cinesamples recommends at least 350 MB of free RAM.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use the CineBrass Descant Horn?

The instrument requires Kontakt 5.5.0 or higher. You can use the free Kontakt Player or the full version of Kontakt, and no additional sample playback software is needed.

Which operating systems and formats are supported?

It is available for Windows and macOS as a Kontakt instrument and as a Standalone application. Native 64-bit support is provided for both the standalone and plug-in versions.

How is a descant horn different from a French horn?

A descant horn has shorter tubing, about 6 feet instead of 12, so its harmonic series sits an octave higher. Cinesamples says its upper register sounds lighter and easier, but it is not as deep in the low range.

How much disk space and RAM does it need?

You need a minimum of 5.1 GB of free hard drive space, with 11 GB required during installation. Cinesamples recommends at least 350 MB of free RAM to load the main articulations patch with the full mix position.
