Origins of the Randy Kerber celeste sound
Randy Kerber is credited with playing the celeste theme in John Williams’ score for Harry Potter. Cinesamples says he developed the sound for that score and that it was later heard in Harry Potter I, II and III, as well as Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, The Adventures of Tintin and Warhorse.
Kerber has described how the sound was built. He started from an initialized voice patch on the DX-7 synthesizer to capture a soft character, then combined it with a sample of an acoustic celeste and manipulated the two together. Artist Series - Randy’s Celeste is based on that combined sound.
