01Overview

Albino-3 Legend Upgrade is aimed at people who already own the original Albino-3 and want its updated version. Rob Papen describes the release as a revival of the 2006 synth, now reworked by in-house programmers. The upgrade adds VST3 support, different GUI sizes and compatibility with recent PC and Mac operating systems and processors. Its core design stays the same: layered sound programs built from oscillators, filters, envelopes and a flexible modulation matrix.

Sound Design Engine and Filters

Each preset is built from up to four layers, and each layer has four oscillators. Oscillator types include Analog, Digital, Noise and Audio Input, with FM and AM modulation available. Oscillator sync is available on Analog Oscillators 2 and 4.

The synth includes four stereo filter types: Silk, Cream, Scream and Comb. Silk, Cream and Scream are multimode filters, each with a different basic design. A Saturation knob before each filter adds overdrive, with four saturation types to choose from. Filters support panning and panning modulation.

Modulation, Arpeggiator and Effects

The synth provides eight envelopes in two types, including a five-stage envelope with loop function, and four LFOs that can sync to MIDI. The modulation matrix offers 16 routings, with 27 sources and 36 destinations.

A 32-step arpeggiator includes modes for modulation and chords, swing and velocity mix. Each layer has four effects units with 12 stereo effects, including choruses, delays, reverb, phaser, flanger and compressor. The Spread function detunes each oscillator for wide, fat sounds.
