01Overview

Albino-3 Legend is a rebuilt version of Albino-3, a synthesizer originally released in 2006 through a collaboration between Peter Linsener and Rob Papen. The updated edition adds VST3 support, different GUI sizes and compatibility with current Windows and macOS systems, including M1 and M2 ARM processors. Its core design is a preset built from up to four layers, each with its own oscillators, filter, envelopes and effects. The instrument ships with more than 2,100 presets by Rob Papen and various artists, and an integrated browser for sorting and searching them.

Layered Sound Design and Filters

Each preset is built from four separate layers, and each layer has four oscillators. The oscillator types are Analog, Digital, Noise and Audio Input, with FM and AM modulation available. Oscillator sync is offered on Analog Oscillators 2 and 4.

The filter section offers four stereo filter types. Three are multimode filters named Silk, Cream and Scream, each with a different basic design, and a Comb type is also included. A Saturation knob sits before each filter to add overdrive before the signal reaches it, with four saturation types to choose from. Filters support panning and panning modulation.

An adjustable Precision setting is intended to recreate the warmth of analog synthesizers.

Modulation, Arpeggiator and Workflow

The instrument has eight envelopes in two types: ADSFR and a five-stage envelope with a loop function, with separate slope and curve settings per stage. Four LFOs are MIDI-syncable and offer adjustable start phase and waveform symmetry.

The modulation matrix provides 16 routings with 27 sources and 36 destinations. A 32-step arpeggiator includes modes for modulation and chords, swing, velocity mix and save and load of its settings. Chord memory is saved with each preset.

For workflow, the Gen randomize function helps with experimentation, and several parameters sit on a rear panel to prevent accidental changes during performance. Controller hardware settings can be saved and restored.

Effects, Polyphony and Microtonal Options

Each layer contains four effects units, and each unit holds 12 stereo effects, including two choruses, two delays, a filter, phaser, reverb, flanger, gator, wah wah, compressor and LoFi. Portamento offers mono and polyphonic glide with Fingered mode and Auto-Bend.

The synth provides 32-voice polyphony with an adjustable voice limit. Microtonal support through Scala file import allows scales such as Indian and Arabic tunings.
