01Overview

The AE600 Active EQ Native v7 is McDSP's Native version of its active equalizer, aimed at mixing and production work in any compatible DAW. Its active EQ bands respond to the input signal or a selected side chain, so the amount of equalization can change with the level of the sound. Each fixed and active band has its own controls, and the plugin includes real time analyzers and band key signal monitoring. McDSP also offers an HD version for AAX DSP users. The plugin supports Windows and macOS and is available in mono and stereo versions.

Active EQ Bands and Controls

The AE600 provides six fully overlapping fixed and active EQ bands. McDSP says every band has its own gain, frequency, Q and mode controls, so each one can be set independently.

The EQ mode is selectable per band. Options include parametric, proportional Q parametric, 5x Q parametric, Baxandall shelving, vintage styled, X-style shelving, Baxandall shelving with filtering, and high and low pass filtering.

Active bands can be adjusted directly on the response plot or with the text readouts above and below it. Individual band bypass, band control linking and input and output controls are also included.

Ratio Control and Side Chain Triggering

In the AE600, the active response of each band is shaped by its threshold, attack and release settings. McDSP adds a ratio control that sets how sensitive the band is to input level, which determines how quickly the active EQ reaches its maximum effect. The developer describes this ratio control as unique to the AE600 and AE400 active equalizers.

Any band can use the input signal or a selected side chain input as its trigger. Peak readouts for each band's key signal help with setting thresholds, and they sit beneath the band dynamics plots.
