03In depth

Classic 80s Drum Machine Sounds on Analog Tape

The pack centers on the Linn Electronics LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland TR-808, Roland TR-909 and Simmons Digital ClapTrap, along with the Simmons SDS-V kit with kick, snare, three toms, hi-hat and cymbal modules.

XLN Audio recorded these instruments through several analog tape machines, including a Lyrec 2-inch 24-track machine, an Otari 1/4-inch 2-track machine and Ampex 1/2-inch 2-track tube machines. The developer says this adds warmth and punch to the recordings.

The pack also uses Neve 1073 preamps and Coles and Gefell room microphones, which the developer uses to capture the room ambience included with each instrument.

Presets, Reverb and Room Ambience

Reel Machines includes presets that range from classic, super-clean sounds to modern, heavily processed ones. Each preset can be tweaked through the Addictive Drums 2 engine to fit a specific track.

Each instrument includes real room ambience and a Stocktronics RX4000 plate reverb that you can blend in. This gives you control over how dry or roomy each drum sounds.

For rhythm ideas, XLN Audio points to its separate Reel Machines Beats MIDIpak.
