01Overview

Black Velvet ADpak is a preset expansion from XLN Audio for Addictive Drums 2. It adds 30 presets that range from clean alternative rock sounds to rougher grunge textures, along with a set of larger, grander presets. The kit was recorded in two different spaces: the drums in a gymnasium-sized hall, and the hi-hat and cymbals in a smaller studio. You need Addictive Drums 2 installed to use it, since this pack only adds presets to that instrument.

Sound and Character of the Black Velvet Kit

The kit uses DW Collector's Series drums and Zildjian cymbals, including several K and A Custom models. XLN Audio describes the sound as massive and larger than life. The drums were captured in a gymnasium-sized recording hall, while the hi-hat and cymbals were recorded in a smaller studio.

According to the developer, changing the overhead and room levels, or loading a different preset, moves the kit between a tight, fat sound and a loud, large one. Automating these levels can also shift the kit between sections of a track, such as a tighter verse and a bigger chorus.

Presets and Workflow

The pack includes 30 presets. Some are clean starting points for sound sculpting and tweaking. Others are production-ready and cover tight and fat, loud and large, and experimental and industrial styles.

Because the presets are built on the Addictive Drums 2 engine, they load directly into that instrument. The developer also points to the Loud Beats & Songs MIDIpak as a companion for matching MIDI drum patterns.
