01Overview

BFD Metal Snares is a preset expansion for the BFD drum platform, focused on snares rather than full kits. The collection includes five snares from Sonor, Gretsch, Zildjian, Ludwig and Pearl, each chosen for a different shell material, thickness, depth and diameter. BFD says metal shells are prized for a brighter, louder tone with more overtones, and the pack aims to cover a wide range of those tonal differences within one library.

Sound, Recording and Versions

Each snare was recorded with wires on and off, giving you a choice of snare response within the same drum. The recording chain uses two top mics, one bottom mic and one side mic, plus mono room, ribbon room and far room ambience channels, along with two stereo reverb channels.

Each snare is delivered in six versions: a natural recording and two processed variations, each with wires on and wires off. Developer BFD describes the processed versions as mix-ready, so you can drop them straight into a track or start from the natural files and shape the room sound yourself.

Workflow and Genre Fit

The natural recordings let you adjust the ambience and tone to your own taste, while the processed versions suit quicker production. The snares were played with sticks, which keeps the attack consistent across the set.

BFD positions the pack for metal, rock and pop. You can also combine these snares with other drums from your BFD libraries to build a custom kit. The pack requires BFD3 version 2.1 or higher, and the download and authorization need an internet connection.
