01Overview

BFD 3.5 is the third generation of BFD's drum studio, built to produce realistic acoustic drum parts with a redesigned engine. Its internal mixer lets you retune, damp and process several microphone channels per drum, and its Groove section offers session-style drum performances and pattern editing. The plugin also adds modelled tom resonance and bleed, improved dynamics matching across drums, and a swell model for cymbal washes. Producers can route channels to discrete outputs for outboard or third-party processing.

Drum sound design and realism in BFD 3.5

The Drum Editor's Tech, Model and Mic sections let you dampen and tune each drum, create custom mic perspectives and adjust pitch and velocity per drum. A new Mics control sets multi-mic levels and individual mic attenuation for each channel.

BFD says the modelled tom resonance and bleed act as a glue that blends the kit together. The modelling changes with the tuning and characteristics of each drum combination, which the developer notes cannot be achieved with samples alone. The same features apply to existing BFD libraries when upgrading.

Grooves, mixing and export workflow

The Groove Editor includes 82 ready-to-play drum Groove Palettes and dozens of individual grooves, along with pattern editing and creation tools. Grooves can be exported by drag and drop, which suits compiling loops.

The mixing engine includes compression, filtering, EQ and algorithmic reverbs, plus 13 AIR Music Tech effects usable as inserts or sends. Multi-channel audio export to disk and the ability to hide extra drums and ambient mics help keep mixing sessions manageable.
