01Overview

Vertigo Strings is a string instrument from Cinematique Instruments built for Kontakt. Instead of a single fixed patch, it combines 16 sound sources that you can mix freely to shape your own ensemble. The sources cover violins, viola, celli and upright basses in several articulations, alongside bowed guitar, a vintage harmonium, a synth string patch and tape-recorded strings. The developer describes the overall sound as deep, rich and organic.

Sound Sources and Ensemble Character

The instrument's core is 16 sound sources that can be mixed, pitched and panned individually. Among them are four violins in ponticello-pianissimo, arco, draft and harmonics articulations, a viola, two celli and two upright basses. The developer also includes bowing noises and a psaltery.

The non-orchestral sources give the ensemble its character. A bowed guitar, a vintage harmonium, a resampled string library and re-recorded tape strings sit alongside the acoustic players. Pre-defined ensembles are available through 15 presets, and the Dice option lets the instrument randomize its settings for unexpected combinations.

Controls, FX and Reverb

Beyond the source mix, the instrument offers a tone control and two character controls called Fog and Retro, which the developer says make the whole instrument sound more vintage and rich. The mod wheel adjusts volume.

The reverb section includes six types. Besides several room sizes, it offers special types named infinite and deep valley.
