01Overview

Pandrum is a sample-based collection from Cinematique Instruments built around handpan and tongue drum sounds. The library includes six handpan instruments, from Zephyr and Leaf to Camenzind and Tiflis, along with two tongue drums. It runs inside Kontakt and is designed for producers who want realistic steel percussion and melodic textures without a physical instrument. The developer describes the sound as rich and warm, with a sampled reproduction that can be extended through the included processing options.

03In depth

Handpan and Tongue Drum Sound Selection

The core of Pandrum is its set of six handpan instruments, which the developer sampled from high-end models including Zephyr, Leaf, Pan Art, Camenzind, Orbi Pan and Tiflis. A dedicated Zephyr percussion set and an Orbi Drum set played with mallets, which the developer says resembles steel drums, extend the range beyond standard melodic playing.

For a different timbre, two tongue drums are included: an Aqua Drum and the long-sustaining RAV Vast. Five additional layer instruments can be mixed in or played on their own, including Gender, a Gamelan vibraphone, a Felt Piano, guitars and a Sald Bowl.

Scales, Sampling and Tone Shaping

Pandrum offers 18 scales. Besides the regular chromatic keyboard layout, these scales let you play authentic handpan tunings. The developer notes that this works especially well with its Wavepan Controller, which it designed for the Pandrum.

Each articulation was recorded with eight round-robin variations across up to five dynamic layers, which helps reduce repetition when playing. The instrument includes an EQ, filters, reverb, delay and effects such as cabinet, drive, tremolo and rotary, so you can reshape the overall sound. Six presets show different ways of playing the instrument and building textures.
