03In depth

Sound character and tape-inspired textures

KLANG developed the TAPED instruments by playing sounds through a range of tape gear and experimenting with the results. The aim is to bring back warmth, saturation and wow and flutter, the small pitch and speed variations that come from tape machines.

Sonic Wastelands was created by recording guitar harmonics and sending them through an old tape machine. A vintage glockenspiel and a resonance pad were added to the mix, giving the instrument a sparse, late-night studio feel.

The developer frames the sound around imperfection rather than polish, so the instrument suits textures that should feel worn and emotive.

Requirements and getting started

Sonic Wastelands is a Kontakt instrument. It requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.6.8 or higher. The free Kontakt Player is not enough: the instrument will run in demo mode there.

Once Kontakt is installed and the instrument is loaded, you can build pads, melodic beds and textural layers around the tape-processed guitar and glockenspiel sounds.
