01Overview

TAPED: Blooming Vibes is part of the TAPED collection from KLANG, a set of instruments inspired by the feel of tape. The developer describes the collection as a nostalgic journey that embraces imperfection, with warmth brought in through saturation and wow and flutter. This instrument focuses on vibraphone tones. Its sound comes from a symphonic vibraphone that has been run through analog tape machines, then combined with a reversed variant with heavily saturated feedback. The result is a blend of tones that bloom and sustain over time.

03In depth

Vibraphone Sound Shaped by Tape

KLANG recorded a symphonic vibraphone and passed it through analog tape machines. The developer adds a reverse version of the same sound, with heavily saturated feedback, so the instrument moves between the familiar mallet attack of a vibraphone and softer, smeared textures.

The tape processing introduces the warmth and small imperfections that the TAPED collection is built around. Saturation adds density to the harmonics, and the wow and flutter character gives each note a slightly organic movement rather than a static, perfectly clean tone.

Endless Delay and Blooming Feedback

The defining feature of the instrument is its endless, even blooming delay feedback. Notes repeat and swell into one another, producing sustained, layered clouds of vibraphone tone. This makes the instrument suited to ambient and atmospheric parts where a single played note can grow into a chord-like texture.

Because the feedback is continuous, the sound keeps developing after the key is released, so the instrument works well for pads, drones and slowly evolving background elements.
