01Overview

TAL-U-NO-LX Synth is built to recreate the sound and layout of a well-known 1980s hardware synthesizer. The developer says its controls were calibrated against a TAL hardware unit, and the filter is a self-resonating zero-feedback delay design with a 24 dB low-pass slope. Beyond the emulation, the plugin adds portamento, mono mode, an arpeggiator and MPE support, so it can be played expressively in a modern session.

Sound Character and Filter Design

The filter is a self-resonating zero-feedback delay design with a 24 dB low-pass response. According to TAL, the oscillators were reworked to be alias-free, which keeps the top end clean, and they remain alias-free at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The filter range reaches up to about 40 kHz, depending on the sample rate.

The synth was calibrated and tuned after a TAL hardware device, so the developer presents the sound as an attempt to match that instrument's behavior rather than a generic virtual analog voice.

Playing Features and Workflow

The plugin offers up to 12 voices, portamento with a mono mode, and a manual trigger button for the LFO. Sustain pedal support is included.

The arpeggiator can sync to the host, to MIDI clock, or run free. MIDI learn and automation work on all controls, and MIDI mapping is supported. The GUI is resizable, and MPE is supported with a +/-48 semitone range, with MIDI channel 1 acting as the master channel.

Presets are managed through a file-based system, which the developer describes as transparent to manage.

Presets and Included Content

The plugin ships with more than 300 factory presets from several sound designers, including FMR, Particular Sound and TAL. A hardware-derived "Factory Bank A" is also included.

The presets give a starting point across a range of sounds, and the file-based system makes it straightforward to save and organize your own patches alongside them.
