01Overview

TAL-Pha is built around an emulation of the Alpha Juno II, an 80s analog synthesizer, and its rack version, the MKS-50. The developer describes it as combining the classic analog character with modern flexibility. Beyond the core sound, the plugin can read and convert SysEx data from the hardware and can also be used to control a hardware device when the DAW supports it. It is available in the AAX format and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a free trial available.

Sound Character and Oscillator Controls

The synth reproduces the sound of its hardware original, and resonance boost allows the filter to self-oscillate. The pulse part of the DCO can be detuned, modulated and synced, giving you more control over the pulse oscillator than the original offers.

Individual tuning for every voice turns the DCO into a VCO, which changes how the oscillators behave across the keyboard. Stereo UNISON mode stacks up to seven voices for wide, thick patches.

Workflow, Effects and Expression

The FX section includes delay, reverb and a bell EQ, with a simple layout. An arpeggiator with several modes is included for rhythmic patterns.

Aftertouch and MPE support allow expressive playing from compatible controllers. Microtuning is supported through TUN file import and the MTS Client, and MIDI Mapping lets you assign controls to your own hardware. The GUI is resizable.

The plugin comes with original factory banks, plus more than 380 presets by Electric Himalaya, The Unfinished, Saif Sameer, emptyvessel and TAL.
