Sound Character and Calibration Section

TAL says the synth reproduces its hardware model's behavior closely, and all sounds come from real-time synthesis rather than sample playback. The calibration section is the feature to explore for aggressive tones. It lets you push the filter into extreme resonance and filter overdrive, which can make the filter scream.

The oscillator section offers VCO-based UNISON with a stereo spread option, and the signal path is fully stereo. That makes it useful for wide pads and thick lead sounds that need width.

Expression, Tuning and Workflow

TAL-J-8 supports MPE, so compatible controllers can shape notes with per-note expression. Microtuning is available through .tun file import and MTS Client support, which lets you work with alternative tunings.

MIDI mapping lets you assign hardware controls to parameters, and the GUI can be resized to suit your screen. The factory library of more than 300 presets, by solidtrax, emptyvessel, Electric Himalaya and others, gives you a starting point before you design your own patches.
