Low-register string sound and character
Gambastard is built from several low-register string instruments, including double bass and viola da gamba. The developer notes that these were played with mallets rather than the typical bow, producing a characteristic and deep sound in the lower octaves.
The instrument is meant to fill out the low end of a symphonic arrangement, giving the bottom of the mix more weight and a distinct tonal color compared with bowed strings.
