SSL X-Gate: Gate and Ducker Plugin by Solid State Logic

Rated 4.8/5 on Plugin Boutique (278 ratings)

SSL X-Gate is a visual gate plugin from Solid State Logic, inspired by the workflow of the company's digital broadcast consoles. It adds a rolling waveform display, split open and close thresholds, and a DUCK mode for ducking one signal under another.

01Overview

X-Gate is built around a rolling waveform graph that shows the incoming signal while you set the open and close thresholds. Its hysteresis control lets the gate open and close at different levels, which helps it stay stable on signals that hover near the threshold. Sidechain filtering, mid/side processing and selectable peak or RMS detection give you several ways to shape how the gate responds to your source material.

Best for

  • Mic bleed reduction
  • Tracking and live recording

Threshold Control and Visual Feedback

The THRESHOLD and RANGE controls are aligned with the waveform graph and gain reduction meter, so you can see exactly where the gate opens and how much it reduces the signal. Traffic light cues show whether the gate is open, closed or holding at any moment.

ATTACK, RELEASE and HOLD parameters give direct control over how the gate shapes the audio over time. An interactive filter graph lets you apply high-pass and low-pass filtering to the sidechain signal, so the gate reacts to the frequencies you choose rather than the full mix.

Detection can be set to peak or RMS, depending on whether your source is transient-heavy or more sustained.

Expander, Ducking and Lookahead Modes

EXPANDER mode, with its KNEE control, offers a gentler alternative to hard gating. It makes quiet signals quieter and widens the dynamic range of the material.

DUCK mode inverts the sidechain logic so the signal is attenuated only when it exceeds the threshold. Solid State Logic gives the example of ducking music when you speak into a microphone.

Lookahead has discrete settings. The developer notes that X-Gate introduces zero additional plugin latency at its lowest lookahead setting, which is useful when tracking with mic bleed present.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does SSL X-Gate support?

X-Gate is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS as a 64-bit plugin.

What do I need to run SSL X-Gate?

On macOS, you need macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 13 Ventura, at least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended) and an Intel dual-core or Apple Silicon processor. On Windows, you need Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit), an Intel Core 2 or comparable CPU at 2.4 GHz or higher, and at least 4 GB of RAM. A free iLok account is required to authorise the software.

Which DAWs are officially supported?

The officially supported DAWs are FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Reaper Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase and Nuendo, and Studio One.

Can X-Gate be used as a ducker?

Yes. Its DUCK mode inverts the sidechain logic so the signal is attenuated only when it exceeds the threshold. The developer suggests pairing it with your DAW's sidechain routing for ducking.
