01Overview

Sonic Surge 2 is an effects plugin from Rave Generation that focuses on dynamics. Its core is a three-band compressor with optical compression modeling, which lets you control each frequency range separately or treat the whole signal as one unit. Beyond compression, it adds per-band tone curves, drive controls, harmonic saturation and transient enhancement, so you can shape density and character in the same processor. It is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows and macOS.

Compression Modes and Crossover Design

Sonic Surge 2 offers two compression modes. Multiband mode treats the three bands independently, with separate threshold, ratio, attack and release settings for each. Fullband mode applies a single, cohesive compression stage using the high band parameters, distributed across all three bands in proportion, while keeping the multiband structure for tone shaping and band drives.

The crossovers are 4th-order (24 dB/octave) Linkwitz-Riley filters. The low crossover adjusts from 60 to 300 Hz and the high crossover from 1200 to 6000 Hz. Adaptive spreading is included to reduce phase issues between bands.

Tone, Drive and Low-End Tools

Each band has a tone curve that works in two directions. The positive setting adds harmonic density through Inflator-style waveshaping, while the negative setting applies dynamic expansion for more openness. A pre-compression or post-compression switch changes how the compressor reacts to the added harmonics.

Harmonic Drive adds tape-like saturation from 0 to 100 percent. Low-Frequency Relaxation high-passes the compression detector, so bass can pass through less affected, and the Mono Maker collapses content below a selectable frequency to mono for a tighter low end. Smart Clip 0dB uses dual-stage soft and hard clipping to limit digital overs at 0 dB.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats and operating systems does Sonic Surge 2 support?

Sonic Surge 2 is available in VST3 and AU formats. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and on macOS 10.13 or later, with native Apple Silicon support on macOS.

What do I need to use Sonic Surge 2?

You need a VST3 or AU compatible DAW. The listed minimum is an Intel Core i5 or AMD equivalent at 2 GHz or faster and 4 GB of RAM, with 8 GB recommended.

What is the difference between Multiband and Fullband mode?

Multiband mode compresses the three bands independently. Fullband mode applies one unified compression stage while keeping the multiband structure for tone shaping and band drives.
