01Overview

Schema Light is a melodic step sequencer built for Kontakt. It pairs a sequencing engine with a collection of soft, upper-range sound sources such as bells, keys, plucked strings and xylophones. Each sound is arranged into four layers that can be sequenced, shaped and combined, so producers can generate and rework patterns quickly. Native Instruments developed it in collaboration with sound designer Tobias Menguser.

Sequencing engine and four-layer sound design

The core of Schema Light is a 16-step sequencer. You start with four tempo-synced loops, each spanning two bars, and toggle up to 16 steps per layer to build melodic patterns. A mod wheel adds expression, and the engine offers advanced scaling options.

Each sound source has four variations. Version A is the original recording, and versions B, C and D apply different processing to the same material. You can mute and solo layers, and randomize loops, slices or the sequencer pattern itself.
