01Overview

MASSIVE X is a software synthesizer from Native Instruments, presented as the successor to the original MASSIVE. Its oscillator section centers on more than 170 wavetables and ten reading modes, including the Gorilla family of aggressive sub-modes. A drag-and-drop routing system lets you connect any output to any input, and a Performer section adds drawn modulation patterns that can be triggered from a keyboard. The plugin ships with a library of presets and genre-focused Expansions.

Oscillators and Sound Character

The oscillator section combines two main oscillators with 170+ wavetables, two sub and noise oscillators, and two additional phase oscillators. Native Instruments describes the Gorilla sub-modes, named King, Kang and Kong, as fat, aggressive tones when fed wavetables.

The synth also includes nine multimode filter types and three master stereo effects with dedicated routing options, so tonal shaping happens both at the voice level and on the output.

Workflow: Routing, Modulation and Macros

Routing is drag-and-drop based, so you can bypass, feed back or send audio between elements as you like. Modulators can also act as audio sources, for example to excite the comb filter.

The Performer section lets you draw modulation patterns and assign them to parameters, with a keyboard-triggered control for playing them. Sixteen assignable macros can be automated from your DAW, and the UI offers changeable skins, CPU-light modes and resizing.
