01Overview

FM8 is built around FM synthesis, a method where one signal modulates the frequency of another to create complex timbres. Native Instruments aims to make that process approachable with an Easy Edit page that maps simple controls onto the more complex parameters. The plugin also includes detailed operator and envelope pages for users who want full control. Its library contains over 1200 presets, covering digital pianos, bells, brass and more.

Sound Design With FM Operators and the Matrix

FM8 uses operators to shape sound. A modulator and a carrier are always connected, and the matrix lets you link any two operators and set the modulation amount for each connection. Because all connections are visible in one overview, you can read the full FM structure of a sound without moving between pages.

Each operator has its own editing page for waveform, frequency mode, MIDI velocity response, panning and amplitude. Amplitude is shaped with a multi-breakpoint envelope, and an Envelope Expert page lets you view and link several envelopes at once, which is useful for keeping two operators' amplitude curves in step.

Morphing, Arpeggiator and Effects

The Morph Square blends between four timbres, with each corner holding one sound. Morph movements can be automated via MIDI or a sequencer, or randomized for experimental results. Every factory preset is built from four timbres.

The arpeggiator turns MIDI input into rhythmic and melodic patterns, with controls for tempo, shuffle, note length, velocity, transposition and repeat modes. It includes 48 templates. The plugin also contains twelve effects, including Overdrive, Tube Amp, Cabinet, Talk Wah, Phaser, Flanger and Tremolo, which can be switched on or off or crossfaded with the dry signal.
