01Overview

Schema Dark is a cinematic pulse instrument from Native Instruments that targets dark, tense textures for film and game scoring. Its sequencing engine lets you build rhythmic patterns across four layers, each made of loops that stay locked to your project tempo. The sound library mixes orchestral recordings, modular synth sequences and field recordings, all sharing a low, pitch-dark tonality. The instrument works inside Kontakt, so it fits into existing sample-based workflows.

The Schema Engine and Pulse Sequencing

Schema Dark is built around a 16-step sequencer. Each of the four layers starts from a two-bar, tempo-synced loop, and you can toggle up to 16 steps per layer to shape a rhythm. A mod wheel changes the density of the pattern, so the same material can move from sparse to dense during a cue.

Playback can be set independently per layer, which makes polyrhythmic patterns practical. Pattern lengths can differ between layers, so the four parts drift in and out of alignment. The developer describes the sequencer as a new design, and it is the core of the instrument.

Sound Library and Sound Design Controls

The library holds 1,700 loops drawn from curated field recordings, modular synth sequences and orchestral recordings made at the Sofia Session Studio. Loops share a dark tonality, and you can play drones, basses and orchestral sounds in key from a MIDI keyboard.

The Tuning knob lets you pitch drums and sound effects independently. For shaping, filters, decay, volume and pitch are editable per step, and six studio-grade effects can be assigned across two send slots. The instrument includes 343 presets, each with four loops, switchable patterns, playback modes and envelopes, which gives you a starting point before you edit.
