01Overview

Rounds is a synth plugin built by Native Instruments around sequencing as much as sound design. It pairs a two-oscillator analog engine with a three-oscillator FM digital engine, and it is designed to play melodies, chords and arpeggios while you shift the sound palette live. The developer describes it as a performance instrument, and its layout is kept deliberately simple, with the essential parameters for each engine on one screen.

Best for

Analog and digital engines for sequenced sound design

Rounds ships with two engines. The analog engine is modeled on a classic two-oscillator synth and is built for a warm, harmonically rich tone. The digital engine is an FM design with three oscillators and a 2-pole filter, which covers sounds from clean and sparkling to metallic and dissonant, with clear note definition.

Each engine supports up to eight sounds, and each sound keeps its own independent parameter settings. That gives you a way to mix analog and digital timbres inside one instrument and sequence between them.

Voice Programmer and live performance controls

The Voice Programmer is the core of Rounds. It contains eight blocks with four cells each, so 32 sound slots in total. Each cell hosts one sound, and five voicing modes control how sounds are distributed across the cells. A modifier lets you refine each voicing mode further.

For performance, the Remote Octave feature maps block on/off assignments to the white keys, while cells map to the black keys so you can switch them in any combination in real time. Up to eight macros can be assigned for control from hardware, and the Multi-Edit view lets you change one parameter across all sounds at once.
