01Overview

Pro Soloist recreates the Pro Soloist, the monophonic preset synth ARP released in 1972, and then goes further. The original's paddle presets and expressive touch controls are reproduced, and its underlying analog architecture is exposed for editing. Polyphonic voicing, split and layer modes, and a dozen integrated effects extend the instrument well beyond the hardware. The developer describes it as a tool for lead, horn, string and woodwind sounds in the style of the original.

Sound Design and the Resonator Bank

Pro Soloist's sound centers on its oscillator, filters and envelopes, which are fully exposed in Edit mode. The oscillator offers sawtooth and pulse waves, plus a Super Wave option for fatter tones. A 24dB/oct voltage-controlled filter can be modulated by ADSR, AR, LFO, Growl, velocity and keyboard tracking.

The Resonator Bank is the most distinctive part of the design. It contains five parallel bandpass filters with continuously variable frequency and resonance controls, each individually modulatable. The frequency curves of the original are included, and any resonator can be set to any curve, in any combination.

Workflow, Layers and Performance Controls

The three-panel interface separates Performance mode, which holds the original paddle presets, from Edit mode and Arp/FX mode. A six-slot modulation matrix with click-to-assign routing offers 22 sources and 58 destinations, including the integrated effects.

Two sounds can play at once using dual 16-voice layers, arranged as a keyboard split or stacked layers, each with its own volume and panning. Touch Sensor Effects apply aftertouch to volume, filter brilliance and portamento, and MIDI learn and automation cover the controls. Panel Control can duplicate and exchange parameters between layers and presets.
