01Overview

Piano Colors turns a grand piano into a sound-design instrument. Its library was recorded with a range of extended playing techniques, with the strings and body of the piano prepared and played in unusual ways. Built-in modulation features, including Motion, the Arpeggiator and Particles, shape the samples over time, producing evolving pads, pulsing grooves and altered tonal colors. It is designed for producers who want piano sounds that go well beyond the conventional.

Extended piano sounds and modulation

The library centers on grand piano samples captured with extended playing techniques rather than standard keyboard performance. Native Instruments says the strings and body of the instrument were prepared and played in highly unusual ways, which yields resonances, harmonics and overtones that are hard to get from a regular piano.

The modulation layer is the main tool for shaping these sources. Motion, the Arpeggiator and the extended Particles engine change the sound in real time, so a single held chord can become an expressive timbre, a rhythmic pattern or a slowly shifting pad.

Workflow and hardware control

Piano Colors runs inside Kontakt, so it fits into a standard Kontakt-based production setup. Layers and engines can each be adjusted separately.

On a KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboard, the expression knob is mapped to the mod wheel, which gives direct physical control over the modulation features during playing.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Piano Colors?

Piano Colors requires Kontakt. You can use the free Kontakt Player or the full Kontakt version 6.5.3 or higher.

How large is the Piano Colors download?

The download size is 56 GB.

What makes Piano Colors different from a standard piano library?

Its samples were recorded with extended playing techniques, using tools such as mallets, drumsticks, rubber, screws and EBows on the strings and body. Modulation engines then reshape the sound over time.

Can I control Piano Colors from a hardware keyboard?

On a KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboard, the expression knob is mapped directly to the mod wheel, giving hands-on control of the modulation features.
