01Overview

Oxford Dynamic EQ - HDX is an effects plugin from Sonnox in the EQ subcategory. Each of its five bands uses the Oxford Type-3 EQ curve, which offers proportional-Q. Sonnox says the plugin can control boomy or harsh frequencies without the static phase distortion linked to multiband compressors. It is intended to run on the DSPs of an Avid HDX system so it does not tax the host processor.

Best for

  • Taming boomy low-mids
  • Harsh vocal sibilance control
  • Drum transient shaping
  • Mid-side mix balancing
  • Bus-level dynamic EQ

Dynamic EQ Sound and Processing Control

The plugin combines EQ and dynamics, so each band can cut or boost in response to the signal rather than applying a fixed change. Bands can overlap fluidly, which lets you shape several problem areas in one source without the low-frequency artifacts Sonnox associates with multiband compressors.

Each band can process and detect from mono, stereo, mid or side channels. Per-band internal and external side-chain controls add further routing options, so one band can respond to another signal while still acting on the source.

Compression, Expansion and Transient Triggering

Each band supports upward and downward compression as well as upward and downward expansion. You can engage a band either by setting a level threshold or by using onset detection, which triggers the effect on transients. Sonnox positions onset detection for precise transient processing.

The interface is designed to make these multiband dynamic workflows easier to follow, which is useful when working across several bands at once.
