01Overview

Other Desert Cities is a delay and modulation plugin built around six algorithms, each with a distinct character. The range covers plain stereo dual delay, reverse delay, tape-style delays, a multi-tap design that can approach reverb, a multi-head experimental delay and a granular pitch-shifting delay. Nearly every control can be modulated, and the plugin includes a diffusor for smearing the feedback path. It is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats.

Best for

  • Experimental sound design
  • Reverse delay effects
  • Granular pitch textures
  • Sidechain delay ducking
  • Reverb-like diffusion

Six Delay Algorithms and Their Character

The six algorithms span a wide range of delay types. Desert Shores is a standard dual delay with basic EQ, saturation, crossfeed and spread. Mecca Reverse Delay plays its repeats backward. Cactus Dual-Delta Delay behaves like a pair of tape delays, with individual speed controls and pitch quantizing.

Thermal Multi-Tap Delay is a dual multi-tap design with spread, crossfeed and basic EQ, and it pairs well with the diffusor for reverb-like textures. Mirage Multi-Head Delay is modeled on a tape delay with a rotating head, which the developer describes as experimental and strange. Sky Valley Granular Delay pitch-shifts the signal with adjustable grain size and scatter, plus EQ.

Modulation, Diffusion and Gain Control

Two tempo-synced variable waveshape LFOs and an envelope follower drive the modulation system. The envelope follower can read the main inputs or a sidechain input, so the delay can respond to the level of another track.

The diffusor smears the feedback path, moving the delay closer to reverb. The I/O section lets you control and modulate every stage of the gain structure. Mute and Input Level act on the delay block only and leave the dry signal untouched, which allows tails to continue after muting and lets you use the plugin as an insert with send-like behavior.

Who Other Desert Cities Suits

Other Desert Cities fits producers who want creative, textural delays rather than a single clean repeat. Its reverse, granular and multi-head modes suit experimental sound design and effects work, while the stereo and tape-style algorithms cover more conventional mixing tasks. Its sidechain-driven modulation and per-stage gain control make it useful for ducking and rhythmic movement.
