01Overview

The MS-20 plugin from KORG recreates the semi-modular synthesizer released in 1978. The developer says it uses KORG's Component Modeling Technology (CMT), which rebuilds the signal path with digital equivalents of the original transistors, capacitors and resistors rather than only copying the output sound. This version refines the 2004 software edition for modern production, with a scalable high-resolution interface, two new multi-effects and 250 updated and new presets. It runs in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats on Windows and macOS.

Sound and Character of the MS-20 Plugin

The original MS-20 is known for its fat, sticky sound and a self-oscillating filter. This plugin reproduces that behavior through CMT, which the developer describes as a method for rebuilding the hardware signal path digitally.

The synth includes two VCOs with ring modulators, an EG with hold and delay functions, and a high-pass / low-pass filter that can self-oscillate for use as an oscillator. An external signal processor allows audio input, which opens up processing as well as synthesis.

Voice handling goes beyond the hardware. The plugin adds 32-voice polyphony and up to 16-voice unison with detune and spread controls.

Patching, Effects and Presets

The semi-modular patch system is the core of the MS-20's flexibility. Patching can be used to build complex sounds, and the high-resolution interface makes those connections easier to control at larger sizes.

Two new multi-effects were added to this version. Together they provide 21 effects, including compression, EQ, delay and reverb, plus 127 ready-to-use effect programs.

The plugin includes 250 updated and new presets. Favorites can be saved for quick recall, and a program browser lets you filter sounds by type.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does the MS-20 plugin support?

MS-20 is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It is listed for 64-bit hosts only.

Which operating systems does MS-20 run on?

MS-20 runs on Windows and macOS. Windows 10 64-bit or higher and macOS 11 or higher are required.

What do I need to use MS-20?

You need a compatible 64-bit host that supports VST3, VST2, AU or AAX. The system requirements call for at least 8 GB of RAM, 8 GB of free disk space and an internet connection.

Is MS-20 based on the original hardware?

KORG says the plugin reproduces the sound and parameter behavior of the original MS-20 using CMT, a method that models the components of the hardware circuit. It is based on the software-emulated MS-20 from 2004 and has been updated for modern use.
