01Overview

The miniKORG 700S brings the sound of KORG's improved 1974 monophonic synth into a plugin. The developer says it reproduces the original analog hardware faithfully, with added features that only software can offer. Beyond the original's signal path, the plugin adds polyphonic and legato playing, a unison function, and a virtual patch bay with eight modulation routings. Five stompbox-style effects and more than 150 presets are included, and the interface can be shown in 2D or 3D.

Faithful Circuitry and Sound Character

KORG says the original miniKORG 700S was a 2VCO, 2VCF, 1EG, 1LFO monophonic synth. The developer notes that its triangle wave oscillator was designed to sound musical rather than scientifically accurate, and that the low and high pass filters were combined into one part called the Traveler Controller.

The envelope is not a standard ADSR. Two sliders control the shape of the sound: one sets attack and decay time, the other sets sustain level and release time. KORG states that these quirks have been reproduced in the software version.

Software Features and Workflow

The plugin adds mono/legato and polyphonic modes, a unison function, a spread function for the stereo image, and an analog function that adds instability. The virtual patch bay lets you choose two modulation sources, such as note velocity or the joystick, from 33 options and assign them to up to 80 destinations, with up to eight combinations available. Destinations include effect parameters.

Three LFOs with six waveforms, key sync and BPM sync are included, along with three ADSR-type envelopes. Plugin parameters can be controlled via MIDI CC from a controller or your DAW.
