01Overview

opsix native brings KORG's opsix synthesizer into the DAW as a plugin with the same sound engine. Its operator mixer shows how each of the six operators shapes the sound, and the interface is redesigned so users new to opsix can follow the concept. It covers several synthesis methods in one instrument, including classic six-operator FM, and it includes a step-based motion sequencer, a modulation matrix and effects processing. Sounds made in opsix native can be exchanged with the hardware opsix through the opsix Sound Librarian.

Sound engine and synthesis methods

The core of opsix native is a six-operator architecture that starts with true six-operator FM. KORG states that the engine can also cover subtractive, semi-modular, analog-style, waveshaping and additive approaches. Subtractive design uses up to six envelopes and multi-modeled filters. Waveshaping adds distortion to the waveforms for harmonic or inharmonic overtones. Additive design stacks waveforms and blends their harmonics.

The operator mixer changes the character of the sound, and 40 preset algorithms define how the six operators interact. You can also create your own algorithms.

Workflow, modulation and sequencing

The MOD section works separately from the operators, with three EGs, three LFOs and 12 virtual patches for modulation routing. The polyphonic motion sequencer can record up to six notes per step, with editable velocity, gate time and playback timing. It can also record changes to up to six parameters within a phrase.

The Randomize feature scrambles all parameters, or only the operators, algorithm or sequences, which is useful when you want a starting point for a new sound.

Effects and who it is for

opsix native provides three blocks of effects with 30 types each. The range covers standard effects such as chorus, phaser, delay and compressor, along with reverbs. The plugin suits producers who want FM and multi-method synthesis inside a DAW, and it also suits anyone who wants to move sounds between the plugin and the hardware opsix.
