01Overview

modwave native brings KORG's modwave synthesizer into the DAW. It is built around wavetable oscillators, a wide choice of stereo filters and a flexible modulation system. The developer says it is fully compatible with the hardware, so sounds can move between a computer and a modwave. Two features set it apart: Kaoss Physics, which turns mouse or trackpad gestures into modulation, and Motion Sequencing 2.0, which records phrases and modulation. Its roots lie in KORG's DW series of digital wavetable synths.

Wavetable Oscillators and Sound Design

Each Program has two wavetable oscillators, a sub oscillator and noise generator, and a choice of a dozen stereo filter types, including the MS-20 and Polysix models. The developer describes the wavetable engine as deep, with over 200 built-in wavetables, each containing up to 64 waveforms. Modifiers and 13 Morph Types shape the tables in real time, and an A/B Blend creates hybrids from any two tables.

You can import wavetables in the standard Serum format, or create your own with the included WaveEdit software. Samples from the built-in PCM library can be layered with the oscillators, and your own samples can be imported with KORG's Sample Builder software.

Modulation, Kaoss Physics and Motion Sequencing

The modulation system includes four triggerable envelopes, five LFOs, dual mod processors and two key-track generators. Kaoss Physics models a ball rolling on a surface, and its position produces four modulation signals that can drive any destination. DAW automation can record both gestures and direct control.

Motion Sequencing 2.0 splits timing, pitch, shape and four step sequence values into separate lanes, each with its own loop points. Steps can be randomly skipped with a probability from 0 to 100 percent, and the dual arpeggiators can interact with motion sequences.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does modwave native support?

modwave native is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. Windows is supported for VST, VST3 and AAX, and macOS for AU, VST, VST3 and AAX.

What do I need to run modwave native?

On macOS you need Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave or higher, an Intel Core i5 or better (Apple Silicon is supported), 8 GB RAM and 8 GB of free disk space. On Windows you need Windows 10 64-bit or higher, an Intel Core i5 or better, 8 GB RAM and 8 GB of free disk space. An internet connection is required.

Can I move sounds between modwave native and the hardware?

Yes. The developer says the software is fully compatible with the modwave hardware, so sounds can be exchanged between the two.
