01Overview

MPC Compressor is an effects plugin from Harrison Consoles built around standard compressor controls: Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and Makeup Gain. Its extra controls focus on keeping a signal's character intact under demanding material. Depth limits the maximum gain reduction, Knee softens how the ratio takes hold, and the Pgm button runs parallel detectors tuned to different speeds. A sidechain EQ and external key input let you shape what drives the compression.

Compression Controls and Sidechain EQ

The core controls cover the usual compressor functions. Threshold sets the level where compression begins, Ratio sets how strongly gain is reduced above it, and Attack and Release set how quickly the compressor engages and recovers.

Depth caps the maximum gain reduction, which can let you run a lower threshold and higher ratio without over-compressing sudden loud peaks. Knee controls how progressively the ratio takes effect as the input gets louder.

The sidechain EQ is a single-band filter with several shapes, including high and low pass, bell, and high and low shelf. Harrison describes using it to make the compressor more sensitive to sibilant vocals, or to keep kick and bass from triggering gain reduction on a full mix. An external sidechain input lets you use another track as the key source.

Program Mode and Gain Reduction Monitoring

The Pgm (Program) button engages three parallel detectors, each tuned to a different speed. Harrison says this helps the compressor behave more consistently on material with a wide dynamic range. When a signal stays loud for a while, gain reduction holds at a lower level rather than fully releasing, so the compressor is ready for the next peak.

A red meter shows the gain reduction being applied, and a history graph shows how the compressor has been reacting over time, which helps when adjusting settings by ear.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does MPC Compressor support?

MPC Compressor is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs as a 64-bit plugin on Windows and macOS.

What do I need to run MPC Compressor?

On Windows, you need Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and an Intel Core 2 or comparable CPU at 2.4GHz or higher. On macOS, you need macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 13 Ventura, with an Intel dual-core Mac at 2.4GHz or higher or an M1 Mac. Both platforms need at least 4 GB of RAM, with 8 GB recommended, and a free iLok account for authorization.

What does the Pgm button do?

Pgm engages three parallel signal detectors tuned to different speeds. Harrison says this keeps the compressor consistent on signals with a high dynamic range, such as material that alternates between loud and quiet sections.

Does MPC Compressor support sidechain compression?

Yes. An external key input lets you use a separate track to drive the detector, and a sidechain EQ with several filter shapes can be used to focus which frequencies trigger compression.
