01Overview

Luft takes its sound from simple aerophonic instruments, all of which produce tone when a stream of air passes through a vibrating reed or over an opening. The developer describes the result as organic, lively and unique. The instrument draws on six groups of sources: fan and pump organs, blown keyboards such as harmonicas and melodicas, simple flutes, a church organ with several registers, and less common sounds like a water bottle or a kazoo. Some sources were resampled through an old tape machine, adding a Mellotron-like character. Luft requires the full version of Kontakt.

Sound Character and Airflow Sources

Every sound in Luft comes from an airflow instrument, so the palette stays consistent even when the sources differ widely. The collection spans a church organ recorded in a mid-size German town church, several fan organs such as the Hohner Organetta and Bontempi Hit Organ, a vintage Swiss harmonica, a shruti box, three Hohner melodicas, and flutes including an orchestral flute, alto recorder, three sizes of ocarina, panflute and bird flute.

Some of the sources were also recorded through a tape machine, which gives them a softer, slightly worn quality. The developer describes the overall tone as lush and warm, with a vibrating, pulsating quality suited to ambient textures.

Layers, Modulation and Workflow

Luft is built from two sound layers, A and B. Each layer lets you select one of the 34 sources and shape it with an EQ section, modulators and distortion. The two layers are then mixed together.

The modwheel controls the overall sound, and it offers five different ways to do so. The instrument includes more than 50 presets, which give a quick starting point for exploring its range before you design your own sounds.
