01Overview

Halo Downmix is built for producers and mixers who deliver in both surround and stereo. Instead of relying on standard downmix coefficients alone, it gives visual control over relative channel levels, timing, and the balance between direct and ambient sound. The developer says this helps produce more coherent stereo versions of surround mixes, including material that originally went through legacy upmix processing. It works on 5.1 and 7.1 material and includes monitoring tools for comparing the two versions quickly.

Surround-to-Stereo Downmixing and Rebalancing

Halo Downmix converts 5.1 and 7.1 mixes to stereo with more control than a simple fold-down. Its controls target common downmix problems: excessive diffuse sound from added reverb, low-frequency content that overwhelms the stereo image, dialog that gets buried, and delay artefacts in the rear channels.

The plugin also has a surround-to-surround mode. You can adjust the levels of individual channels and the balance of direct and diffuse sound in an existing 5.1 or 7.1 mix. NUGEN Audio notes this is useful when the original mix is no longer available.

Monitoring and Parallel Surround and Stereo Workflow

Halo Downmix offers 5.1 and 7.1 modes, along with advanced and compact layouts. Quick-select in-place monitoring switches between stereo and surround signals, and linked solo and mute functions are available at every stage. The surround energy distribution is shown visually.

For a parallel workflow, Halo Downmix can be used with the included Receive plug-in. This lets you A/B the full surround mix against its stereo downmix in rapid succession.
