Sound Character and Source Material
The instrument is built from the sound of a staircase that KLANG's team had repeatedly drummed on with their hands, a sound they found rich and appealing. KLANG combined this material with a xylophone and applied some distortion.
The result is a hybrid of wooden percussion and tuned mallet tones. KLANG presents it as an example of how field recordings can inspire a new instrument and, in turn, a new song.
Because the source is a real architectural element rather than a synthesized tone, the sound carries the natural character of the recorded wood.
