01Overview

Ensemblia 2: Orchestral Shorts is built around a modern chamber orchestra sound, drawing on the minimalist style associated with Steve Reich and Michael Nyman. The instrument uses seven separate tracks that you can assign from a large pool of instruments, so you can assemble your own ensemble. A voicing engine distributes your played notes across these tracks, which lets the instrument create polyphonic arrangements and patterns from the notes you play rather than from prerecorded phrases or MIDI files.

Ensemble Building and Voicing Engine

The core of the instrument is seven instrument tracks, each of which can be freely assigned from more than 50 instruments. The collection includes viola, violin, cello and double bass in solo and trio setups, plus tuba, trombones, horn, bass clarinet, flute, several saxophones, an electric guitar, bowed guitars, bowed psaltery and three church organ registers.

The voicing engine decides which of your played notes each track plays. You can set this individually for each instrument and for each step, so the same chord can be split across the ensemble in different ways.

Arranger, Mixer and Presets

The arranger is a 32-step track sequencer that plays patterns as soon as you trigger it. Combined with the voicing engine, it can produce complex patterns from simple input.

The mixer offers seven sound slots and a master track. Each slot has a three-band EQ, an attack/decay compressor, length, tuning, and reverb and delay controls. A 3D panning feature is also included. The instrument ships with 120 preset patterns that load through a file browser.
