01Overview

Convolver by Kilohearts is an effect plugin built around convolution, a process that combines an incoming sound with an impulse response. Its best-known use is reverb, where an impulse response captured in a real space imprints that space's ambience on other audio. Because impulse responses are simply audio files, the plugin can also load your own samples to shape sound in less conventional ways.

Impulse Responses for Reverb and Sound Design

The developer describes convolution as a way to apply the character of one recorded sound to another. An impulse response captured from a room, a hall or a short click can be used to place any sound inside that space.

Convolver includes a large library of factory impulse responses, more than 300 according to Kilohearts, covering a range of reverbs and unique effects. You can also import any sample you want, so the same engine can emulate anything from a guitar amp cabinet to filters and distinctive delays.

Shaping the Impulse Response and Output

Convolver offers controls to edit the impulse response before it is processed. Start and End cut the beginning and end of the response, Fade In and Fade Out smooth its edges, Stretch changes both length and pitch, and Reverse plays the response backwards. Start, End, Fade In and Fade Out require precomputation before the effect can be heard and cannot be modulated.

On the output side, Delay sets the pre-delay in milliseconds or as a tempo fraction, Tone adjusts brightness, Feedback feeds the processed signal back into the engine, and Mix sets the dry/wet balance.
