01Overview

Abstract Mallets from Karanyi Sounds is a mallet instrument library for Kontakt. It focuses on transient-rich marimba and vibraphone sounds, recorded in a dry studio in Budapest and performed by percussionist Nandor Weisz. The library is built for producers working in electronic music and film score who want percussive tones with a contemporary edge rather than a purely acoustic orchestral feel.

Marimba and Vibraphone Sound and Character

The library is split into two instruments. Abstract Marimba is sampled from an Adams Concert Marimba, with six hit and tremolo instruments played with soft, medium and hard sticks, hands and brush, across four velocity layers from pianissimo to forte. Abstract Vibes is based on a Yamaha Concert Vibraphone, with four hit and tremolo instruments played with soft and hard sticks, string bow and brush, across three velocity layers.

Both instruments include additional articulations that layer analog synthesizer sublayers under the acoustic sounds. For the marimba these come from Oberheim and Dave Smith synthesizers, and for the vibes from Dave Smith, Roland analog and modular synths.

Recording Setup and Controls

Each instrument was recorded with three microphone positions: two AT35 microphones for the mid mix and a Shure SM57 for the close mix, captured on a Universal Audio Apollo X. The samples were recorded at 24-bit / 48kHz.

The Marimba instrument offers 17 GUI controls, including instrument switching, attack-decay control, room mix adjustment, EQ presets, tape, chorus, reverb and a master compressor. The Vibes instrument offers 18 GUI controls, including a tremolo control. All GUI elements are MIDI learnable.
