01Overview

XO Expansion: Boom Bap is built for producers making hip-hop beats in the boom bap style. It is a preset pack that runs inside XLN Audio's XO, so it adds ready-made patterns rather than a standalone instrument. The developer describes the sound as dusty drums, chopped samples and swung grooves, with crunchy kicks, snappy snares, swung hi-hats and textured percussion layers. Each preset is a fully editable sequence in the XO sequencer, so you can start from a finished groove and rework it.

03In depth

Sounds and sequences inside the pack

The expansion includes 75 Boom Bap-flavored presets and more than 160 handcrafted, genre-specific samples. Each preset is a full sequence that can be opened in XO's sequencer, which makes it easy to see how the beat is built and change individual hits, patterns or timing.

XLN Audio says the presets draw on classic hip-hop production, with drums that carry vinyl warmth. The 1-shot samples are curated for the genre, so the pack can supply the core kit as well as the groove.

The presets are also described as mix-ready, so you can use them as they are or adjust the sounds to fit your project.

Workflow with XO's sample swapping

XO's features let you swap sounds for similar samples with a single click. You can switch to sounds from your own sample collection, or filter on a specific range to create variations of a beat.

The engine can produce a wide range of variations from each preset, which helps when you need alternate drum patterns for a verse, a hook or a remix. Because the sequences are editable, you can keep the parts you like and rebuild the rest.
