Sound and Character of the JMP 2203 Model

The JMP 2203 was created to offer a master volume, so players could reach a distorted tone without the extreme volume levels of earlier non-master amps. The model reflects this design. Keeping preamp gain low pushes most of the distortion through the power amp, which gives a more 1960s Marshall sound. Turning the master volume down and the preamp up produces a more edgy, present distortion.

Softube describes the model as a careful emulation of the amp, with the character associated with the JCM800 family and with rock and hard rock tones.

Cabinet Microphones and Channel Controls

The speaker cabinet was recorded by Tony Platt, who worked on AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Back in Black. The cabinet recording uses five microphones, two dynamic and three condenser, and you can use two at a time. Each channel has its own mic selection, pan, on/off switch and volume fader.

The channel strip also includes an input gate, Low, Mid and High gain controls, a Mid frequency control, a clip indicator and a master output. These controls let you shape the tone inside the plug-in before it reaches your mix.
