AZS Serum Classic Trance is a preset collection for xfer Serum built around the sound of classic trance from around 2000. Resonance Sound developed the bank to cover the core production sounds of the genre: basses, leads, pads and plucks, along with a few drum and FX sounds. The presets use Serum's filters, EQ, distortion and dynamics sections to shape tones that feel vintage but still fit modern productions.

Sound and Character of the Trance Presets

Resonance Sound says Serum's default sound is clean and clear, so the presets here push further into character. Many patches use Serum's filters, EQ, distortion and clipping, and dynamics section to add grit and shape. The bank also includes small single samples, stereo waveforms, noise, and waveforms that recall classic digital wave playback (PCM) synths. These additions widen the palette in key areas beyond Serum's basic sample playback oscillator.

The presets are aimed at the EDM genre, including the current revival of classic trance and melodic techno, which often borrows retro trance sounds.

Bank Contents and Workflow

The bank contains 36 basses, 33 leads, 33 pads, 18 plucks, 47 assorted sounds, and a handful of FX and drum presets. Many sounds cross categories, so a lead can work as a bass or a pluck can serve as a lead.

Several presets include modwheel and velocity assignments where they are useful, and many have macro assignments for adjusting tone variations and the effects mix. MIDI files are included to help with melodic and rhythmic ideas.
